Keeping Your Store Tidy

Grab a Broom!

Spring is not the only time for cleaning. In fact, only choosing to clean in spring will leave you with a big mess for the remainder of the year, right? And who said cleaning was limited to just your lawn and laundry? It's time to invest in a little well-spent time doing some 'virtual' chores.

If you're like most store owners, a good chunk of your time is spent gathering product data, creating new items, updating existing product information, and entertaining clients. Although there's much to be done in respect to the tasks listed, you may find yourself flabbergasted at the time spent updating your store versus the time spent cleaning up after yourself.

Put the Water Hose Down!

Before you decide to 'wash' your problems away, save your H20 (and your computer, for goodness sake) and follow these simple tips to help you iron out the wrinkles:

1) Clipboard Items Before leaving your precious store real estate hanging in the balance of Siberia (as the programmers know it), ensure yourself that these content pages and/or items are not needed before your next publish. In many cases, items are simply abandoned in the Store Editor's clipboard, which may be a huge mistake if the item is in stock and ready for sale. Keeping the clipboard up means keeping the numbers that matter up.

2) Remove Unused Edit Buttons It's easy to remove some of the edit buttons that you hardly use in your Store Editor. Simply click on the 'Controls' button in the edit menu, and view the options under 'Store Editor Setting.' Here, you can select a default editor mode (whether to show advanced buttons or not), select to show or hide the 'Publish' and 'Manager' button for every page in the store, and a number of other options.

3) Show Uncalled Templates Also in the 'Controls' section of your Store Editor, there is an option to show or hide uncalled templates. This option is only for the owners who are familiar with RTML, and would like to compress the list of templates outlined in the 'Templates' section to only contain those being used in the store.

4) Default Item Templates When making items manually (without the use of a spreadsheet), you may also need to adjust the default templates. Many store owners still find themselves typing in the name of the template associated with a particular section or product. This is easily remedied by navigating to the 'Config' section of your Store Editor, and choosing default templates for each of the categories specified.

5) 'Find ID' Feature Another time-saver is the 'Find' feature, which is normally the first button on your edit bar. Using this feature will allow you to search for an ID, rather than going through the long list of contents hoping to come across the page you are looking for.
